Ayurveda, the traditional Indian system of treatment has originated from the God Brahma. Ancient Indian Saints, Acharyas had practiced this form of treatment. Since it deals with the life span, "Ayuss", the name Ayurveda came into being. The main Diety of Ayurveda is Lord "Dhanwanthari".
Among the four Vedas, Ayurveda is described mainly in "Adharva Veda". It is based on two theories, "Panchabhutas" and "Tridoshas".
Panchabhutas are Sky, Air, Agni, Water and
Earth and the Tridoshas are Vatha, Pitha and Kabha. The root cause of all
our ailments is based on any one of this or a combination of two or more
of these elements.
The history has it that the origin of Ayurveda is ‘Brahma’ and he taught
this form of treatment to Daksha Prajapathy and Aswini Deavas
learnt Ayurveda from him. They had then transferred this knowledge to
Devaendra and from him Athreya Rishi learnt
Ayurveda. Subsequently, Agnivesadi Maharshi learnt this wonderful
form of treatment and wrote books on this subject which are the
main sources of reference for Ayurveda.
Vagbhatacharya, compiled all these books and wrote his book, "Ashtanga
Samgraha" and he arranged this in a particular manner as "Ashtanga
Hridhayam".
It is divided into eight Angas:-
Kaya Chikitsa
Bala Chikitsa
Graha Chikitsa
Urdhanga Chikitsa
Salya Chikitsa
Visha Chikitsa
Rasayana Chikitsa
Vajeekarana Chikitsa
